What do I need to be a prospector in Saskatchewan? Do I need a prospector licence? And where am I allowed to prospect?
Anyone may prospect or stake claims in Saskatchewan. No license is required.
Our various mineral regulations are commodity based, not deposit type based. To secure the rights to prospect for minerals in Saskatchewan, a mineral claim is required. To extract minerals commercially, that claim must be converted to lease. A claim is not required to prospect. Prospecting(exploring) may take place on any undisposed crown lands. Staking the claim secures exclusive rights to prospect. Please note that neither a mineral claim nor a mineral lease grants surface rights. Permits are generally required by the Ministry of Environment to conduct work.
Areas available – no dispositions issued – are shown on what we call the Atlas available here.
All forms related to mineral dispositions and the rules for staking are available here.

Copies of mineral titles are obtained from ISC. They can be reached at 200-10 Research Drive, Regina, SK. S4P 3V7; Toll Free 1-866-275-4721 Fax 306-798-1399; E-mail: ask@isc.ca; Web site: www.isc.ca. I currently have some mineral rights and I would like an appraisal, is this the ministry I contact?
The Acts governing the activities of our ministry prevent ministry officials from advising private mineral owners or their estates of the value of their mineral rights. You may wish to contact an oil consultant for this purpose. Several of these are listed in the yellow pages of the Regina telephone directory under Oil Consultants.
We have gas gathering and processing facilities in Saskatchewan. Where do I find information on metering regulations?
Pursuant to section 100(1) of The Oil and Gas Conservation Regulations, 1985 all gas produced is to be accurately measured with an approved gas meter unless the minister gives approval to dispense with the metering of gas. Pursuant to section 100(11) of The Oil and Gas Conservation Regulations, 1985:
"The minister may permit group meter measurement or, after examination, may exempt any well from metering the volume of gas produced there from, but only if a satisfactory estimate of the volume of gas so produced is supplied to the department in lieu of the meter measurement."
If you have any further questions, please contact Mike Montenegro via email or by phone at (306) 787-4285.
